The Flight of the Drones

DSC_6381

This is becoming like a nature blog. Each time I take a walk, I see something I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, e.g. these flies hovering in a stream of sunlight shining bright through the wood. They behave like hoverflies but are larger, about the size of a bee and, if you’re into insects you’ll probably know them as they seem to be quite common. They are White Banded Drone Flies, a.k.a. Pellucid Hoverflies, a.k.a. Volucella pellucens – or so I found out. They are indeed a type of hoverfly that exhibits this behaviour of hovering in the stream of sunlight at about head height.

No one seems to really know why hoverflies hover. Why do they remain static in flight?
