Culzean Castle, Ayrshire

Like many Ayrshire natives, I’m no stranger to the Culzean Estate. Last Sunday, I was going to see the ‘Forces in the Field’ event, but thought I’d get down early to have a wander. The lighting was so good I started with some shots of the castle. It’s not the type of photography I’m striving for, but when it’s there in front of you………

While I have photographed this building before, I found these results just a bit better than usual – guess that’s the lighting. The building exterior had been renovated relatively recently and so it’s looking it’s best.

If you don’t know of Culzean, it’s a long time since there was ever any actual defensive castle here. When this was redesigned and rebuilt in the 18th century, it was to produce one of the finest and imposing stately homes in Scotland. (The cannons are just for show.) And the interior design is even more impressive than the outside. It was also a holiday residence for one General Dwight Eisenhower during the last century – (google it!). Unfortunately photography is not allowed within the building.

I dare say these won’t be my last photographs of this place.

  1. Culzean is beautiful – great shots.

Thanks for your recent visit to The Glasgow Gallivanter. It was a couple of weeks ago so please forgive the delayed response – I’ve been away. I think I’m going to like your blog!
