Express your Feelings

I’ve put together this post in response to a challenge set by a horse. What!!!!

The subject of the challenge is Communication. What does “communication” mean to me? — so many many things – and we’re all on communication overload at the moment, except for one thing.

I’m sorry Biasini (that’s the horse that set the challenge), but I can’t make ‘head nor tail’ of the horse’s expression in the picture above – maybe you can help me out there. But I can certainly pick up on the mood of the rider and perhaps it’s just as well we can’t hear what she’s saying.

One sound way of communicating personally is through your facial expression, and I wondered, in these times of so many people wearing face coverings, whether I might be starting to miss out on something.

So, as we have to put up with so many face masks……..

…….I thought I could remind myself about some different facial expressions here. Now, facial communication seems strangely exaggerated when people dress up and have fun (or not) …. so here’s a few expressions from various events I attended over the years. I think you should be able to work out the mental state of these folk, as conveyed by their expressions.

But then there’s this guy below?? – and his feelings are all over the place – whatever he’s up to it’s putting his facial muscles into spasms. So what you have to do here is try and guess what he’s actually doing. It’s a puzzle. Answer at the very bottom.

He’s simply caught up in the rhythm.

Thanks to Biasini (assisted by Anne Leueen) for setting this challenge via Lens-Artists Photo Challenge 118 – Communication. It certainly got my mind working this week.

  1. Hello JazziBee Human! I think your response to my challenge is very interesting. Those Humans have very expressive faces. We horses would be able to tell what most of them were thinking. We can read humans faces well as our lives have depended on it for a long time. I can tell you what has happened with the horse in your first photo. I believe they have had a mishap. The rider may have fallen off ( note there is one stirrup hanging and the other over the top of the saddle) also the rider is holding onto the horse by one rein and the horse is not comfortable with how the bit feels when she does that. Also the horse’s nostrils are flared. This could be because they have been cantering or galloping or it could also be that the horse is stressed. Maybe because of the odd outfit the rider is wearing. Anyway thanks for responding to my challenge!🐴

    1. You’re correct! There had been a fall and the race was stopped. I didn’t see what happened but this rider and rider appeared round the bend and was clearly very angry. I was surprised by her outfit.
