Lost Horizon

WE haven’t seen the coast for a couple of weeks due to our local restrictions. So when we could we drove up over the hill to a parking place where we full panoramic view over the Firth of Clyde. It was so clear and looked so amazing that no camera could do it justice.

This couple of images show just a small part of the view where the best light arose. The island on the horizon is Ailsa Craig. For those not familiar with this volcanic plug popping up out of the sea about 10 miles off the coast of Ayrshire (but 30 miles from the place I took these shots).

Ailsa Craig is well known for its craggy outline. It’s a bird sanctuary with a massive colony of breeding Gannets (Morus bassanus). The island is made of granite and the rock has been quarried for the manufacture of curling stones – 60-70% of all the world’s curling stones are made from Ailsa Craig granite.

  1. A glorious horizon, James. And thank you for sending it in these the gloomiest days of the year. Maybe next year we can laugh and believe in future sunny days.
