The Twa Dogs

in one frame #5

Two dog sculptures take up a position on a residential street – just a couple of streets away from Irvine Harbour. Seems an odd position, this is not a main thoroughfare. Why are they here? It’s a puzzle to me, but anyway they still bring delight.

There are two similar dogs set into a space in the neighbouring town of Kilmarnock, right in the town centre, and this is a direct reference to Robert Burn’s well-known poem, ‘The Twa Dogs’. Kilmarnock centre is a very apt position as it is where the original edition of Robert Burn’s poems was first published, just before he became a star for 18th century Scottish society. (This just happens to be Burns Night)

This style of sculpture is by renowned Glasgow artist, Shona Kinloch, who has produced many beautiful bronzes depicting both animals and humans. Ms. Kinloch first produced a set of ‘Seven Glasgow Dogs’ for the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988, and since then she has received many commissions for public works of art – see here.

When I stumbled across these two mystery dogs in Irvine I wanted to set them off in their location involving the residential building behind them. Shot into the light, the image required a bit of processing to get it looking as I wished.
