Wheels on Display

Classic Car shows are not something I regularly attend but every now and then a visit certainly brings back memories and feelings of nostalgia. The Ayrshire Classic Car Club displays cars many times each year at different venues but this one was so close to home I had to go along.

I was interested in their definition of a Classic Car, along the lines of ‘if you think yours is a classic car, then it’s a classic car’ So there were many old ones but also some newer vehicles as well that are going to become icons.

The Hillman Super Imp below – it was the first car we owned though ours was white. Even more nostalgic for us in that they were built in Scotland in a neighbouring county. When I saw this I had not remembered how small it was – the bonnet just came up over the height of my knee.

Next, I was intrigued by this old van – How old must it be? What great condition has it been kept in?

And look at the interior of this old Sunbeam – must have been top of the range which includes a dashboard clock.

I believe the cars below are Nissan Figaro convertibles from the Far East. I was quite taken with the retro styling and two-tone paint jobs all built in 1991 – again kept in immaculate condition.

From East to West – here’s a two-tone paint job from the US…… a Chevy Bel Air Sports Sedan from Los Angeles (1956). If you really want to be noticed, just get one of these. (That’s one of my mate taking a photo of the bonnet/hood)

So one issue with photographing car displays, is that they are so busy it’s hard to avoid getting people in your shots. To try and get around that I ventured out to a nearby road. There was to be an organised procession of some of the cars around our town so I hoped to get some shots of cars going by – with some panning.

So here we have a Ford Popular 103E (1950s ), a Triumph Herald (1960s), an old Riley (I think) and a Ford Mustang Mach 1 (~1970)

Everything going by had four wheels, and then this guy came by with just three – looks like great fun.

So plenty on display that day and loads worth photographing.

  1. Great great photos. I love those old cars. I too have trouble getting the people out of a car shot. Sometimes I move in for closeups, but that isn’t what I always want.

    1. Thanks John! I once made sure I went along near closing time so I could get them on the way out on the road. But it would be nice to get more space around them at the show too. It’s still good fun.

  2. Well worth the photography for us as well! I appreciate you taking time to show the cars in motion, and away form the crowds. I am not much of a car show person either. My husband loves them and I enjoy going along for photos. I loved the info you shared about all of them too. Great On Display, James!! Love the old van.

  3. I go to car shows at least once a year, And they should be old cars, classic cars. Cars were made to shine and be beautiful in those days. Today I think almost all cars looks the same… Love your old van and the biker! Good panning there. All cars well kept and good looking. Colours looked so great in those days.

  4. Great shots! I really love the interiors of those old cars, and how all the controls and gauges were arranged. And I have been at old car shows but I would not have thought to photograph the vehicles being driven. Great post!
