I was lucky to be able to attend the final event for the Lloyds Cyclo-cross National Trophy Series of 2025-26.
Cyclo-cross is cycle racing over rough terrain with steep hills, twisting tracks and tough sections where the riders must dismount and carry their bikes. In this particular event there was even a section that required riders to cross a section of sand on the beach. Races are held for different classes for men, women, kids, with different age ranges.
More imagesI’ve been lucky to have opportunities for sports action over the years. I don’t know if I’ll be doing so much sports photography in future – I have ideas of making changes – so I thought I’d put together some of my better action images to date.
Read more – more imagesI recall a famous quote that says that a portrait shot in colour shows the person’s clothes, but take a portrait in monochrome and it shows the person’s soul.
It’s a great quote, and I’m beginning to think the same theory applies to sports photography. Colour is great for showing the glamour and the visual impact, but a black and white image really seems to show more of the soul of the sport.
more photographsMany guys that do this wear black wet suits. Against the sea background they seem almost in mono anyway. But then there’s a wee bit or bright blue or orange on the board itself, which stands out so much – it looks strange. So the answer is to convert it all to black and white for a Monchrome Monday.

Kitesurfers thoroughly enjoy these windy conditions and roaring waves. I hadn’t seen them jump so high before and moving so fast on the water.
