Asymmetrical

Lens-Artist Challenge #274

Last week, I tried to cover symmetry and show some images that showed this reflection about an axis. Now I’ve been prompted By Donna at Wind Kisses blog to consider Asymmetry. Well, I know one thing is that such images shouldn’t be symmetrical but should despite that show some balance. I’ll try with this selection.

Now some subjects are just not symmetrical. Last week I had two (almost) symmetrical swans and here I have another two that chose to show me asymmetrical positions, and I think they still balance one another reasonably well.

Swans Preening

A roof garden at New Lanark

Ideal asymmetry may come around when there’s something in one half that isn’t quite reflected in the other half. The twigs on this tree are fairly symmetrical but then there’s a bird.

Male Chaffinch

Or a building which is itself symmetrical but the slope of the land it has been built on has required the construction of accommodatingly off-centre steps.

Then I’ve found asymmetry made out of a symmetrical subject by choosing and off-centre viewpoint and angle.

Then sometimes I find myself trying to make sure the one side of the image is just totally different from the other. But have I created a balance there or not?

Castle and Cloud – and a crescent moon

And finally, another shot of a symmetrical subject such that asymmetry is captured by choice of shooting position.

High Gloss – a boat image asymmetrical to the reflection

And that last image is transformed by that magical software stuff (that involved a substantial change in hue) into a similarly asymmetrical abstract. (I can’t exactly remember how on earth I did that).

I’m sure I could frame that one.

So, many thanks to Donna at her blog Wind Kisses for starting off this challenge with some excellent asymmetrical images. In fact, if you click on this link HERE, you find not just Donna’s images but many links to other diverse shows of asymmetrical images.

  1. These are all gorgeous! Love especially, especially the chaffinch and the castle and cloud. But the mural and walker is a hit! The light in your swan picture is wonderful.

    1. Thanks! It was the brown boat in the photo above that one. I don’t remember exactly how I managed the transformation but I believe I used a filter called ‘polar to rectangular’. You need maths to work out what that does.

  2. LOL for your closing image and comment James – I can’t tell you how many times that has happened to me! Loved all of your choices this week but of particular note each of your creature images really drew me in. The swans this week compared to last was a great idea and the little bird is marvelous. Also loved that pointy building and the mural. Super!

    1. Thanks Tina! Thanks for your kind comments! I’d forgotten that image of the pointy building – so this challenge has resurrected it for me.

  3. Yes, this will do it! Fantastic and creative ideas, James. The swans, the roof garden and the bird with great explanations showcase asymmetry. The funky staircase is a fun find and I love what you did with the park bench. I love the last set where the tow sides are completely different. The lemur has the cutest expression. I loved the mural and think the human on the right brings even more balance to the photo. And…that last photo would go nicely in my home….just saying. Always a pleasure.

  4. This is wonderful. I like your candor, it transpires on your photography and posts. It is so clever to have symmetrical subjects but to capture them in a asymmetrical way, the power and balance is there. All great photos but the bird one is truly special.
